SF2 Provides Sludge Blanket Level for Pig Farm

Sludge Finder 2 provides accurate sludge blanket level measurement for Pig Farming operations in Taiwan.

At the Taiwan Sugar Corporation (TSC), the Livestock division currently operates 17 pig farms that have passed the production resume certifications issued by the Council of Agriculture. TSC has vertically integrated its feed production, pig farming, meat processing, and sales channels to form a healthy and safe meat supply system that covers each aspect from upstream to downstream of this supply chain.

TSC has collaborated with the central government to promote its vision of “Happy Farmer, Safe Agriculture, and Prosperous Farming Village” by striving to transform the livestock industry and green energy technology.

The goal was to inventory the existing agricultural biomass waste – including that of pig manure and transform them into viable energy generation operations.

Wastewater Treatment

The operation of a healthy and safe pig farm means lots of wastewater. For the manure to be turned into biogas, it is essential that waste from the farms is treated first at the firm’s onsite wastewater treatment plants.

To be able to extract the manure and other particles from wastewater, the treated substance must first pass-through sedimentary tanks where the particles can settle – called the sludge blanket. Once the sludge blanket has reached optimum pumping levels, it is then pumped from the sedimentary tanks for biogas generation.

Accurate Sludge Blanket Level

Before contacting Red Star Instruments, Pulsar Measurement’s Partner for Taiwan, the end user was measuring mechanical pressure actuation/timepiece to control the blanket level. This was proving to be both time consuming and labor intensive, so they reached out to Red Star instruments for help with automating this process.

The two-part system from Pulsar Measurement consists of The Sludge Finder 2 and Viper Transducer and has been purposely designed for sludge blanket level measurement. The Sludge Finder 2 uses proven echo processing algorithms to identify the sludge interface level using state-of-the-art technology only found in this unit.

Flexible Transducer Arm for Optimal Results

Using the optional flexible transducer arm for the Viper Transducer, Red Star Instruments were able to install the unit and transducer optimally for the end user. Using Pulsar Measurement’s industry leading DATEM technology, they were able to hone in on the true level of the sludge blanket and set accurate parameters for the pumps. The self-cleaning wiper on the face of the Viper Transducer allows the unit to stay clear of debris or build up, so that measurements are never compromised.

The Sludge Finder 2 provided accurate and time-saving results for the end user and the use of DATEM technology provided a lot of help with automatic control.
