Thurston County Comments on Pulsar Measurement Area-Velocity Flow Meters

Thurston County, Washington has been using Pulsar Measurement flowmeters for about seven years. The Stingray and the AVFM 6.1 have been used across multiple stormwater applications. Primarily their focus is to measure stormwater flow so that engineers can develop flow capacity for stormwater projects.

The Stingray has been deployed in multiple locations within their stormwater facilities to gauge the effectiveness of the County’s designs and construction methods. Engineers achieve this by deploying the Pulsar Measurement Stingray system a minimum of one year before construction, during the design phase, and one year after construction periods.

In addition to the portable Area Velocity Logger, Thurston County also use the more robust and permanent installation of the AVFM 6.1 for long-term deployment in one of their permitted discharge sites. This time, the AVFM 6.1 is monitoring and recording flows that are directly related to the discharge fees that are paid by Thurston County to the local wastewater treatment utility company. Prior to this installation, the plant operator used an interpolated chart to average how much wastewater was flowing into the municipal system, this method resulted in overpayment by thousands of dollars each year. The AVFM 6.1 enabled the county to save on time and money and resulted in a very happy customer!
