What are ATEX and IECEx Certifications?

ATEX and IECEx Certifications are a credential that verifies equipment for use in environments that might be prone to explosions. It is a requirement for all companies who manufacture electrical equipment that is intended to be sold in Europe and Internationally. ATEX and IECEx certification is given to equipment that has gone through rigorous testing outlined by European Union (EU) and IEC directives, and proved safe to use in specific zones with explosive atmospheres.

What sensors does this apply to?

This applies to our sensors that are supplied with the TTFM 6.1, the SE16A small pipe sensors, the SE16B mid-size sensors, and SE16C large-pipe sensors. But not only the SE16 range, we also have ATEX and IECEx certification for the SE4 sensor that is supplied with our DFM 6.1 Doppler Flow Meter.

What are the technical details?

The method of protection for these sensors is intrinsic safety, which means intrinsic safety barriers need to be installed between the controller (the electronics of the TTFM or DFM) mounted in a safe location, and the sensors which can be installed in Zone 0, 1 or 2 environments. But don’t worry, when you order the intrinsic option directly from us, these barriers already come pre-installed in the controller. The specific ATEX/IECEx marking is “Ex ia IIB T4 Ga” and you’ll be able to download the certificate from our website.

Why is this important?

In wastewater applications like in collection systems and at the treatment plant, there are flow measurement applications where the point of measurement is inside a hazardous location boundary. Having this approval ensures the Pulsar Measurement clamp-on flow sensors can reliably be used. The TTFM 6.1 Transit-Time Flow Meter and DFM 6.1 Doppler Flow Meter sensors are clamp-on, which makes them incredibly easy to install on new construction or retrofit projects alike, as well as being cost-effective for both the price of the meter and installation compared to other wetted flow technologies.

In addition to wastewater, there are many applications in oil & gas, metals & mining, or other industrial applications where clamp-on metering is an attractive option. The TTFM 6.1 is perfect for cleaner fluids in these industries, like produced water, chemicals, process water, or DI/RO water. The DFM 6.1 is perfect for the more difficult fluids where suspended solids or gasses would wear or defeat other traditional technologies. Consider it for measurement of drilling fluids, slurries, transportation of solids in fluid, or extremely viscous fluids.

How do I order the ATEX/IECEx option?

To order your intrinsically safe TTFM or DFM, you should contact your local Pulsar Measurement sales manager or local Pulsar Measurement official partner.
